Allergen statement

Read this before you order.

If you have a food allergy or an intolerance, read this page all the way through. If anything is unclear, email hello@indys.uk before you order rather than after.

The 14 allergens

UK law names 14 ingredients that have to be declared whenever they are used. They are the same 14 you see on a menu in a restaurant.

  1. Cereals containing gluten: wheat, including spelt and khorasan, rye, barley and oats
  2. Crustaceans, for example prawns, crab and lobster
  3. Eggs
  4. Fish
  5. Peanuts
  6. Soybeans
  7. Milk, including lactose
  8. Nuts: almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios and macadamia nuts
  9. Celery
  10. Mustard
  11. Sesame seeds
  12. Sulphur dioxide and sulphites, above 10 mg per kilogram or per litre
  13. Lupin
  14. Molluscs, for example mussels and squid

That list is Annex II of the food information regulation the UK kept after leaving the EU.

Where you find the information

Before you order. Every dish on the menu shows its ingredients and says which of the 14 it contains. You are buying at a distance, so you get that before you pay, not when the food turns up.

On the box. Every meal carries a label with the name of the dish, the full ingredient list with the allergens picked out in bold, the calories and macros, a use-by date and how to reheat it. That is what the Food Information (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2019, which everybody calls Natasha's Law, requires for food packed on the premises it is sold from.

The label always wins. If the site and the label ever disagree, believe the label, and tell us so we can fix the site.

One kitchen, shared equipment

We cook everything in a single kitchen. The same surfaces, pans, containers and hands handle every dish we make, and ingredients containing all 14 allergens are in that kitchen.

So we cannot promise that any meal is completely free of any allergen. We can tell you what we put in a dish on purpose. We cannot rule out that a trace of something else reached it while it was being made.

We follow our food safety procedures, we clean down between preparations and we store allergens separately. That lowers the risk. It does not remove it.

If your reaction is severe, talk to us before you order so we can tell you honestly whether we are able to feed you safely. For some allergies the honest answer is that we are not, and we would rather say so than take your money.

We cannot filter a dish out for you

There is no allergen filter and no ingredient exclusion. The only variation we offer is the meat-free menu, and it is a different set of dishes rather than the same dishes with the meat taken out.

What that means for you in practice: every dish lists its ingredients and its allergens before you order, and again on the label. If a dish contains something you must avoid, you have to see it there and decide. We cannot leave an ingredient out of a dish, and we cannot swap one dish for another.

If you have a diagnosed allergy to any of the 14, this service is probably not right for you yet. Talk to us before you order rather than after.

Where our nutrition data comes from

Our recipes and their nutritional values start from a general ingredient database. That is reference material, not a measurement of the specific ingredients in our kitchen.

Before a label is printed we check the recipe against the products our own suppliers actually deliver, because two tins of the same thing from two suppliers do not always contain the same things. Where a supplier's product differs, the supplier's information is what goes on the label. If we change a supplier or substitute an ingredient, the label changes with it, which is why we ask you to read the label on the day even for a dish you have eaten before.

Telling us

Email hello@indys.uk before you order and tell us what you react to. We will tell you honestly whether we can feed you safely. Nothing we can do changes food that has already been cooked, so it has to be a conversation before the first delivery, not after it.
